Job Title: Publicist, HarperCollins Christian Publishing (18-month contract)
Department: Publicity
Reporting To: Director, Publicity
Location: 22 Adelaide St West, Toronto


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Publicity, the successful candidate will manage all aspects of publicity for HarperCollins’ Christian Publishing program, as well as, books from the trade publishing program.
The incumbent will work 50% of the time from home and 50% of the time from our Toronto office.


Major Accountabilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with religious and mainstream broadcast, print and online media to secure reviews and features
  • Develop and maintain relationships with festival directors and booksellers
  • Develop and maintain relationships with religious event organizers
  • Create press materials including press releases, pitch letters, interview topics/questions
  • Secure reviews, interviews and other coverage in print, broadcast and online
  • Pitch events with festivals and established event series 
  • Plan and execute multi-city tours in Canada
  • Manage budgets for individual books
  • Manage publicity budget for HCCP program
  • Liaise with the marketing and sales departments on book campaigns
  • Coordinate media mailings 
  • Cultivate author relationships
  • Liaise with international sales team for HarperCollins Christian Publishing program
  • Cultivate author relationships


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Minimum 1 - 3 years of experience in publicity/public relations
  • Post-secondary education in a related field. Publishing Program Certificate would be an asset.
  • Good standing relationship with Canadian media and booksellers
  • Good understanding of Christian media
  • Knowledge of Canadian publishing industry
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a love of books 
  • Able to multi-task, determine priorities, and remain cool under pressure 
  • Must have excellent phone and computer skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be results driven, and take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed
  • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and demonstrate good follow up and follow through
  • Drives change and innovation by improving work product or process, and challenges established norms where appropriate
  • A valid driver’s license would be an asset
